Mutan Riba trees in Taman Tugu
Mutan riba tree is an indigenous rainforest tree amongst the 4,100 trees added to the Taman Tugu site, selected in collaboration with Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (“FRIM”) and Malaysian Nature Society (“MNS”).
The tree is a monoecious shrub or small to medium-sized tree, which can grow up to 10m tall. The leaves are alternate, usually compound with 3-7 leaflets, with domatia. Its branched flowering shoot is hairy and bears short-stalked flowers, without petals or with up to 3 petals. The fruits are red, measuring about 7–20mm long and glabrous to sparsely hairy. They also have lobes that are egg-shaped to ellipsoid to faintly 3-angled in cross section.
The wood yields good quality charcoal. A decoction of the roots is used medicinally for coughs.
These trees grow in primary and secondary forests up to 1,600m altitude. These trees are found in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
