Date: 18 July 2019
Location: Taman Tugu
Participants of the Soroptimist International Convention Kuala Lumpur 2019 and members of the Federation of Soroptimist International of South West Pacific, contributed towards the Amanah Warisan Negara’s (“AWAN”) endowment by adopting 5 Malaysian rainforest trees. These trees are part of the 4,100 trees being added to Taman Tugu.
Soroptimist International (“SI”) is a worldwide volunteer service organisation for women who work for peace, and in particular to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.
For the first time since the organisation was founded in 1921, the international convention is being held in Asia. To kick off their convention in Kuala Lumpur and in line with the current issue of climate change, more than 60 participants took part in planting the trees they adopted. It is believed on average, a rainforest tree sequesters about 30 metric tonnes of Carbon Dioxide in its first 30 years!
After the planting session, the participants had a refreshment break and were taken on a guided forest walk in Taman Tugu. The participants left Taman Tugu on a high note and well pleased with their contribution to Taman Tugu and the environment.
We would like to express our heartiest gratitude to the participants of the Soroptimist International Convention Kuala Lumpur 2019 and members of the Federation of Soroptimist International of South West Pacific for their donation in support of the Taman Tugu Project and conservation of public green spaces.
