Date: 21 April 2018
Venue: Khazanah ILMU Bungalow
Malaysian Environmental NGOs (“MENGO”), a national coalition of environmental NGOs, organised its fourth annual general meeting and celebrated Earth Day on Saturday, 21st April 2018 at Khazanah ILMU Bungalow, Taman Tugu Kuala Lumpur.
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on 22nd April in more than 193 countries. Various events and exhibitions are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.
At the Earth Day event this year, leaders/representatives of the MENGO-member NGOs have planted 31 Merbau trees that were first planted as seeds at the Taman Tugu Project launch 2 years ago. The Merbau trees were planted along one of the jungle trails of Taman Tugu Park – the trail will be opened to the public by end of Q3 this year.
Additionally, “Asia’s Wildlife – A Journey to the Forests of Hope”, a book by Bjorn Olesen and Fanny Lai was launched at the event, with Olesen himself conducting a short presentation of the book at the launch.
Throughout the day, various activities were held with participating public – “Seed Planting Activity”, in collaboration with Malaysia Nature Society and “Upcycling Activity (Make A Table)”, in collaboration with Biji-Biji.
The seeds planted are currently being cared for at the Taman Tugu Nursery and the table made is currently being used at the Khazanah ILMU Bungalow.
