The Open Company Girl Guides Association dedicated their Sunday morning to learning about nature and upcycling at the Taman Tugu Nursery.
The girls started the morning with a guided walk in the trails and learnt about the history of Taman Tugu and interesting facts about nature and our flora and fauna. During their guided walk, the girls insisted on exploring the secondary trails which are said to be more adventurous.
After the walk, the girls then headed back to the nursery and learnt how they could upcycle items such as plastic bottles, tissue rolls, and polybags into planting pots. The girls got their hands dirty by mixing soil with organic compost and cocopeat, putting the mixed soil into their upcycled pots, then planting forest species which are propagated by the stem.
The girls enjoyed this outdoor classroom session which puts the environment at the heart of the lesson. Spending time with nature and learning about our flora and fauna helps increase children’s attention span, creative thinking skills, and emotional intelligence – it makes them more compassionate and mindful about their consumption. The girls also learnt the value of our environment and how to care for it.
The session ended with a picnic at the Forest House where the group did not use any plastic items and took their waste home.
It was our pleasure to be part of an outdoor classroom experience for the girls and we look forward to being a classroom for more children.
