Taman Tugu Public River Care Open Classrooms With Global Environment Centre

Date: 29 January 2019
Location: Taman Tugu

We formalised our collaboration with Global Environment Centre (“GEC”) for the River Care Open Classroom Programme by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with GEC last December.

The River Care Open Classroom is an outdoor classroom focusing on river conservation and creating awareness on the importance of our rivers and other waterways. The stream at the Phase 2 trails will be used as the site of the classroom.

As part of setting up this programme, GEC assisted us to restore the stream to prepare the site for the classroom.

We kick started this partnership and the year with 4 public River Care Open Classroom sessions for children throughout this month of January. More than 100 enthusiastic children from 6 – 15 years old learnt about our rivers such as where they come from and how do they flow, had the chance to test the temperature, Oxygen level, pH, and turbidity of our water, and also saw some of the macro invertebrates of wetlands areas. They also learnt the importance of our drainage system and how drains connect to our rivers and eventually oceans. Parents who accompanied their children learnt a fair bit too and claimed they did not know much of rivers and the drainage system prior to the classrooms.

The aim of the classroom is to create a river care society, acquiring strong environmental values and becoming more environmentally sustainable especially on our river source.

We aspire for these outdoor classroom sessions to instill a sense of ownership and care towards the environment and nature and act as a platform for people to be exposed to nature, understand where our water comes from, and to value it.  These efforts are for the general public and we hope that by getting them to spend more time with nature, it will make them guardians of it.

On 23rd February, there will be a River Care Open Classroom session for adults. As places as limited, please register at https://goo.gl/forms/sI0jrK7rpQN6yDV73.

We would like to express our heartiest gratitude to GEC for this collaboration.
