Kembang Semangkok trees in Taman Tugu
The Kembang Semangkok tree is an indigenous rainforest tree that are amongst the 4,100 trees added to the Taman Tugu site, selected in collaboration with Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (“FRIM”) and Malaysian Nature Society (“MNS”).

Physical Features
The tree is an evergreen tree growing up to 45m tall. The bark of the tree can grow up to 87cm in diameter with thick buttresses. Its leaves are ovate or suborbicular with rounded base. The simple, alternate leaves also have long petioles. Young saplings have leaves that are palmately-lobed. Its small, white-yellow flowers are arranged in panicles. The fruits are large, glabrous, papery follicle that dehisces to form a boat-shaped structure, with one glabrous seed on one end.

The seed is commonly used to make a popular drink in southeast Asia. The wood is harvested for making furniture. The seeds are believed to have medicinal properties and are used to treat diarrhea and dysentery.

These trees grow on well-drained hillsides, ridges, swamp forests, and sub-montane forests up to 1,200m altitude and native to Malaysia, Cambodia, and Indonesia.
