Date: 16 March 2019
Location: Taman Tugu
Malaysia Building Society Berhad Bank (“MBSB”) Bank assisted us and our partner Global Environment Centre (“GEC”) to restore the stream at the Taman Tugu Phase 2 trails this Saturday morning.
The session started with a brief by GEC about the waterways and their importance to the ecosystem followed by details of the activity. As part of the activity, the MBSB team cleared forest debris from the source of the stream to allow for the water to flow smoothly. They also cleared other parts of the stream to ensure cleanliness and smooth flow of water. Then wetland plants which also act as natural water filters, such as Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinth, were placed in the water body whilst Cattail and Coco-Yam were planted at the river banks.
After the activity, the MBSB team were taken on a guided walk towards the Taman Tugu Nursery via the Phase 1 trails and ended there with lunch.
The stream restoration is an ongoing process and we are aiming to fully restore the stream in order for it to further balance the ecosystem of Taman Tugu as rivers and streams are an integral part of the ecosystem. Additionally, we are in collaboration with GEC to run the Taman Tugu River Open Education Centre which is an outdoor classroom focusing on river conservation – teaching about the importance of our local waterways and empowering people to protect the waterways from pollution. The aim of the classroom is to create a river care society, acquiring strong environmental values and becoming more environmentally sustainable especially on our river source.
We aspire for these restoration activities and outdoor classroom sessions to instil a sense of ownership and care towards the environment and nature and act as a platform for people to be exposed to nature, understand where our water comes from, and to value it. These efforts are for the general public and we hope that by getting them to spend more time with nature, it will make them guardians of it.
We would like to express our heartiest gratitude to MBSB for their donation in support of the Taman Tugu Project and conservation of public green spaces.
If you or your organisation would like to organise any events and/ or activities at Taman Tugu, or if you are interested or would like to get your children to participate in the River Open Education Centre programme, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
